Right after the collaboration with Sega through porting the Windows CE in the Dreamcast console, the said console was the primary product that Microsoft ventured to the video game console market. A small Microsoft team together with a certain game developer Seamus Blackley developed the first edition of the Xbox game. During an interview with Bill Gates the Microsoft CEO, Microsoft repeatedly adjourned the said console.

Through a press release, Microsoft confirmed the fact about the importance of the multimedia/gaming device as Bill Gates stated that devices for online or multimedia gaming are essential for the convergence of multimedia of the modern times. Several audiences were amazed by the technology the console has as Bill Gates exposed the Xbox to the conference of Game Developers in the year 2000. The announcement made by Bill Gates diminished Sega’s Dreamcast and had let Sony’s PlayStation 2 to hit the streets of Japan.

Though Europe was later proven to be a receptive market, Microsoft adjourned the European Launch to concentrate in making huge success in Japan. Originally, the first name of the Xbox console was the DirectX box which came from the Microsoft DirectX Developers Group. After a focus testing, the first name of the console was later on changed into Xbox.

This video game console was the first major console to incorporate a hard disk drive, it used primarily for storing game saves compressed in ZIP archives and content downloaded from Xbox Live. It is also the first product in the gaming industry to feature Dolby Interactive Content-Encoding Technology. Xbox is based on commodity PC hardware and is larger and heavier than its contemporaries.
